Overview
Belgrave Baheno is a community-based organization that has sustained steady growth over 25 years having over 5,000 women as members. In 2002, Belgrave Baheno aimed to address the needs of women and girls, particularly Asian women living primarily in the Belgrave area of Leicester.
Belgrave Baheno recognised that overreliance on funding leads to short-term thinking, the diffusion of strategic intent, and a culture of dependency. The Peepul Centre model of community-led regeneration represents a crucial practical opportunity to break the ‘begging bowl’ cycle of passive grant receiving. The Peepul Centre was the first example in the United Kingdom of a community-led regeneration project, and the Government and European Union closely followed its progress through Kingston’s periodic reports.
