About Project

The U.S. Antarctic Program, funded by the National Science Foundation’s Office of Polar Programs, support all researches in Antarctica. Currently, the USAP operates three stations in Antarctica, the McMurdo Station, the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, and the Palmer Station. The program’s fiscal budget for 2008 was US$295 million, and for 2012 was USO $350 million.

Overview

The United States Antarctic Program represents the United States of America in Antarctica. Carrying forward U.S.’s goals supporting the Antarctic Treaty, the program strives to encourage international cooperation, maintain an active and influential presence in the region, and conduct high-quality scientific research while sustaining funding efficiency.

The assigned project management team was the Antarctic Support Associates, who managed the $10 million project to design/build the mobile runway support facility at the Mc Murdo Station, Antarctica. 

Managed project assessment, structural and mechanical design, construction, manufacturing and start-up. The facility included an avionic repair centre, power generation and distribution, waste treatment and handling, food service, and cargo & personnel transit. 

Significant design and construction issues were centred on modular construction for mobile structures, solar heating, energy efficiency, operational safety, and system redundancy.assess progress and performance based on planned/scheduled and actual/forecast performance, and designed and implemented direct labour cost control systems.
